Max was still standing in the middle of the street, trying to get his pulse to return to normal, when he heard someone jogging toward him. Spinning, he saw one of the other campus officers slow to a walk.

“Hey, is everything okay. I was trying to break up a fight at one of the apartments on this side of campus when I heard the call that you were in a knife fight.”

Officer Pete Jackson was one of the other policemen on campus. Though he was a good twenty years older than Max, he was still in great shape. Max found that he liked the older man more than most of the other officers he worked with.

“How’d you get here?” Max asked, meeting the man at his SUV.

“Walked. Are you sure you’re alright, you’re bleeding.” Looking at his arms, Max found a line of blood that had soaked through his left arm.

“Shit, he must have caught me with his blade.”

“Come on, I’ll drive you to the clinic to have that sewn up.” Climbing into the driver’s seat, Pete dropped Max off at the clinic before heading back to the office.

“You’ll need to come fill out a report about that,” he called out of the vehicle before driving off. With a sigh, Max walked into the clinic past kids barfing into buckets and holding ice on injuries.

After an hour of waiting for someone to sew his arm back up, then half an hour of filling out an incident report, he finally made it to his apartment to clean up. Quickly he ran through the shower before pulling on clean jeans and a button-down shirt.

Grabbing his jacket, he drove his motorcycle downtown, parking in back by Parker’s Ram Charger. Walking around the front, he pushed through the front door of Donnelly’s. Even through the crowd, he saw Karlie almost immediately.

“Hey, badass of the night, what would you like to drink? It’s on the house.” Parker waved him over to the bar. “The ladies have been regaling me with your exploits in wrestling would-be rapists and whatnot all evening.” Max rolled his eyes at Parker as he motioned to the nearest tap.

Sliding the beer in front of him, Parker motioned toward the corner. “You’ll find them in the corner minding their manners. In those outfits though, you might need to borrow my bat to keep the vultures at bay.”

“Thanks, man.” Max held up his beer in toast to the bartender before pushing through the crowd toward the back tables.

“Well, aren’t you ladies every man’s dream,” he said, walking up to their table. They had been joined by one of their other flatmates, Emma he thought. She sat next to Astrid in a full Eeyore onesie.

Flinching from the sound of feminine squeals of greeting, he pulled Karlie up from her chair, reseating her on his lap when he sat down. He liked that the place was so packed she had to sit on his lap.

“You should be proud of us,” Karlie said, snuggling against him. “We’ve turned down every offer of alcohol.
